Reading has been proven to help people deal with their stress. Even though reading is sometimes mandatory for things like school, it actually has many benefits. Not only does it teach us new words and helps us learn to read faster, but it also reduces stress. Whether you like reading or not, it helps relieve stress and some people use reading as an escape from school or any other thing stressing them out. Reading allows people to relax and not think about the main stressors in their lives. When stressed, your body is tense, your heart rate goes up, and your blood pressure goes up. Reading loosens up your body and lowers your heart rate. Reading for Stress Relief article said, “A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%.” This shows that reading had really helped many individuals and if someone wants to be less stressed, they should try this. It is said that this method of relieving stress is proven to work even better than listening to music. If you choose your favorite book or magazine, curl up with a blanket, find a place where you won’t be distracted, and read for 30 minutes, you should feel more relaxed and relieved of stress. Here are some important things to remember. Pick a book that will interest you; don’t choose a book that you will get bored with two minutes into reading. Pick something that won’t upset you; don’t pick a book about the current news or stressful things that are happening in the world. Choose a book that takes you into an imaginary world or a place where you can escape. Lastly, make sure that reading is the right thing for you. It is pointless to continue reading searching for stress relief if it isn’t helping you. Find something that you enjoy doing that will relieve stress and make you feel as relaxed as possible.
